Pioneering Welsh record company ANKSTMUSIK celebrates twenty years of releasing underground music with a new volume of especially chosen tracks from the period 1998 - 2008.

Radio Crymi Platlist: Vol 2 is a selection of favourites chosen by label boss Emyr Glyn Williams and fully reflects the bi-lingual nature of the company and the spread of artists released by the label since the original ANKST label became ANKSTMUSIK in 1998.

Vol 2 includes twenty tracks that include incendiary rap attacks, terrifying metal, soothing acoustic rock, jumpy reggae, youthful punk, alternative rock tunes, club sounds, indie love songs and plenty of music that defies easy categorisation. Artists range from the legendary (Geraint Jarman, Datblygu and Llwybr Llaethog) to essential contemporary artists (MC Mabon, Ectogram, Zabrinski) to the brand new (punky teenagers The Stilletoes) and the collection includes three exclusive brand new recordings (up on www.myspace.com/ankstmusik)

"A remarkable performance - the intensity of sound and spectacle is palpable" - THE WIRE

"It's an all action show -action painting, action sculpture, action-playing. When the lights go up, the scene is one of devastation" - MOJO

"Avant-Garde chaos" - NME

ANKSTMUSIK are proud to announce the DVD release of the concert film FAUST: NOBODY KNOWS IF IT EVER HAPPENED. Following on from successful screenings at the ICA in London and at selected UK film festivals this unique concert movie is now available to buy on DVD.

On Sunday 1st of December 1996 legendary Krautrock pioneers FAUST played an explosive concert at The Garage, London. NOBODY KNOWS IF IT EVER HAPPENED is a record of that extraordinary concert. The film is faithful to the sound, fury and disorientation of their performance as it takes the viewer into the thrilling "here and now" of that packed venue on that winter evening... The band's usual instrumentation was augmented on the night by amplified power tools, arc welders, hay threshing machinery and in an evening of action painting, nudity, destruction and creation the band more than lived up to their promise of creating more of a happening than a standard concert. The film features original members Jean Herve Peron, Hans Joachim Irmler and Werner "Zappi" Diermaier with special guests guitarist Steven Wray Lobdell and sculptress Insa Winkler .

This DVD edition includes STRUKTUR - an exclusive fifty minute behind the scenes document shot by the late Arthur Howes. Also included is a bonus performance of the classic track FLASHBACK CARUSO and specially commissioned liner notes from Andy Wilson, author of the recently released FAUST book Stretch Out Time.

"Nobody Knows .." is producer / director Emyr Glyn Williams' second production for Ankstmusik. His first cinema film - the Bafta winning Y Lleill (The Others) will be appearing on DVD later on in 2007.

WHAT THE PRESS SAY

A remarkable performance, a feat of stamina that proves these Germans could still handle the kind of eclectic scene shifting they achieved on their classic Krautrock albums of the early 70's. It also proved they could rock and the intensity of sound and spectacle is palpable. They are in their own world, on their own time, absorbed in their own devilish pact. - THE WIRE.

They no longer live in a commune but judging by this performance they’ve lost none of their instinct for the unusual. It is almost a continuation of their shows from 1973-4 a belated picking up of the baton they so noisily dropped back then, and a resumption of the spirit of Krautrock. Who knows what they'll be up to in 25 years time? - MOJO

Since Faust introduced metallic percussion into the rock vocabulary , groups such as Test Dept,Pere Ubu and Enstürzende Neubauten may have popularised the notion further, but none have approached their task with such obvious art-terrorist gusto. It's not all noise and industry. Interspersed between the more demanding pieces are a few pristine miniatures. At the opposite extreme the threshing machine doesn't disappoint. I don't know whether it was art but it was certainly entertaining. - THE INDEPENDENT.

Following the successful premiere of the Ankstmusik film "Nobody Knows if it ever Happened" at the ICA in December, there were further cinema showings of the film at the 2nd Flatpack Film Festival in Birmingham on 4th February and at Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff on 4th March

This BAFTA award winning bilingual first feature from Emyr Glyn Williams (ANKSTMUSIK boss and producer of both tonight¹s films) is a contemporary tale about music and other less important things. The lives of a group of young aimless musicians (Y Lleill) are examined as they play two concerts over a wintry weekend in north Wales. The importance of music to the individuals and the society they exist in is examined in the film. Music is played, recorded, stolen, attacked and censored. As Y Lleill play their music the hypocrisy and deceit that exists between the young characters and the resistance to their music that exists in the wider Welsh society is revealed. Manipulative guitarist and singer Pati (Rhian Green) starts the film by stealing the records she can't afford and sets Y Lleill on a collision course with the established order. Meanwhile lead singer Rob (John Reynolds) is a different kind of thief who blindly follows his desires oblivious to family and friends. These fragile relationships are set to explode on stage as the band edge towards one last truly 'revolutionary' performance. A contemporary tale shot through with politics, small town paranoia and rock¹n¹roll.

SESHIWNS RADIO is a collection of 25 previously unreleased tracks by Welsh musical maverick MC MABON (Gruff Meredith). Between 1999 and 2002 MC MABON recorded and released three highly acclaimed albums for ankstmusik records (MR BLAIDD (2000), THE HUNT FOR MEANING (2001) and NIA NON (2002) ) which were all praised for their undoubted originality and wide musical vision. At the same time as recording these albums Gruff Meredith was also engaged in putting across another musical side to MC MABON through the recording of radio sessions for the likes of John Peel and Huw Stephens at Radio 1, Radio Wales¹s Adam Walton and the Welsh language Radio Cymru. These were recordings that didn¹t include any album tracks and in some ways were musically quite different to the artist encountered on the albums he released. Ankstmusik is proud to announce that all seven of these radio session are now available as one album (a kind of a 'lost fourth album' from MC MABON¹s ankstmusik period) and are confident that the sheer quality of the songwriting and the vibrant performances make it the equal of those earlier albums.

Ectogram give free reign to their psychedelic sensibilites to visualize an instinctively adventurous rock music that has evolved into the present century unencumbered by nostalgic reverence. At the same time, they never lose sight of the primal physicality and inquisitive thirst that made this genre so alluring in the first place. They stretch the limits of their minimal instrumentation: Ann Matthews on vocals & guitar, Alan Holmes on guitar and Maeyc Hewitt on drums, never falling back on mere generic stylings but at times evoking a sonic palette more reminiscent of an arms testing facility than a rock'n'roll trio. Drummer Maeyc stylistically fuses heroes Karl Bartos and Elvin Jones to catapult the listener recklessly through the sonic substructures linking the chromadelic splatter paintings of Ann's vorticist 12-string architectures to the shimmeringly abrasive aural iron filings dragged hither and thither across the soundfield by Alan's neo-fragmentist magnetic 6-string. Just when it's all on the brink of disintegration, Ann brings it back into crystalline focus with probably the only voice in rock history to have drawn comparisons with both Dagmar Krause and Clare Grogan.

The trio's fourth album ³Electric Deckchair² is the fruit of recent sessions in Bryn Derwen studio with sound wizard Michael Auld at the controls. Several hours of live performances by the group were captured, of both improvisations and compositions, with the only subsequent overdubs being vocals. This has resulted in an album which comes closer to the elusive live Ectogram experience than any previous release. After whittling the results down to a manageable 80+ minutes, the group opted to compile two separate discs of standard LP length, each sequenced to stand as a complete album in its own right. The resulting 2 CD set makes for a much more focussed listening experience than the exhausting 80 minute marathons that have become the norm in the digital age, whilst still delivering a full quota of post-tonal sonic thrills. Both discs flit effortlessly between concise 2-3 minute songs and extended 20 minute odysseys in a manner that suggests the group have never been fully familiarised with market targeting. Since finishing the album, Ectogram have been to Germany twice to perform at the Klangbad festival in Scheer and the Schiphorst Avant Garde festival near Hamburg, having been personally invited as guests of krautrock godfathers Faust.

Ectogram will also be special guests on the "Faust in Autumn" UK tour, as well as appearing at the Welsh Film Festival in Cardiff for the premiere of the independent Welsh feature film "Y Lleill" (see details below), to which they provided the soundtrack.

Produced independently by AnkstMusik with the express intention of creating a new radical cinema in Wales. Y LLEILL (The Others) is a bilingual film that tries to incorporate ideas about music into a straightforward narrative set square in the 'here and now'. Wales proves a perfect background for such an examination as music is a powerful index of social, cultural and personal conflicts in its modern society. Shot in under ten days in January 2005, Y LLEILL features an young unknown cast drawn from the world it describes and a brilliant soundtrack composed and recorded specifically for the film by avant rock trio Ectogram. After the premiere the film will play at selected venues around Wales up until Christmas.

ZABRINSKI

ILL GOTTEN GAME

released JUNE 16th 2005

ANKSTMUSIK records will be releasing the new ZABRINSKI album 'Ill Gotten Game' (cat no ANKST 113) on Monday 16th of June through Shellshock Distribution.

'Ill Gotten Game' is the follow up album to the critically acclaimed 'Koala Ko-Ordination' and will be the third album the band have recorded for ankst.

This new collection easily places the band at the forefront of the latest generation of young british bands who fearlessly mix killer melodies with an adventurous mix of radical recording techniques, classic song compositions and a recognisable band sound that is all their own.

The album includes a re-working of their singles 'Executive Decision' (a brave and by now classic reflection on the warmongering New Britain and a recent recipient of the prestigous Single of The Year award in December 2004's yearly roundup in Record Collector magazine); and the equally catchy and unsettling 'Feeding on our filth' (which was available as a 7" only single on their recent support slot on the last Super Furry Animals UK tour).

Brand new highlights include the bi-polar 'Ill gotten game', the extended melody forest that is 'Hit The Rez' and 'GNVQ' .

This album has an incredible freshness and indescribable warmth and is the full realization of the band's early promise. Recorded and mixed at their mysterious Cardiff studios this version is also released with two excellent promo videos.

Full details of live appearances by the band will be released closer to the time.

ZABRINSKI are

Matthew Durbridge - Vocals/Guitar/Electronics, Gareth Richardson - Guitar, Rhun Lenny - Bass, Owain Jones - Drums, Kris Jenkins - Percussion / Electronics.

Track Listing is

1. Ill Gotten Game (pts 1+2)

2. Feeding on our filth

3. GNVQ

4. Executive Decision

5. Mother my faith in human kindess has somewhat faded recently

6. Hit the Rez

7. Seal my Cave

8. Society and Stuff

9. Go Clone Alone

''You'd have to be a bit of a ninny to ignore Datblygu, this is the band that makes me want to learn the Welsh language'' - John Peel

''Datblygu lyrics ARE the Welsh Gospel'' - Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals)

Braint gan Recordiau Ankstmusik yw cyhoeddi fod 'box set' arbennig iawn ar fin cael ei rhyddhau. Mi fydd ''WYAU, PYST A LIBERTINO' yn cynnwys y tri clasur a rhyddhawyd gan y grwp dylanwadol o Aberteifi DATBLYGU ynghyd a llyfryn sy'n cynnwys cyfeithiadau newydd sbon o'r caneuon gan David R. Edwards.

Mae'r 'box set' yma yn un o'r prosiecta mwya cynhwysfawr mae Ankstmusik erioed wedi paratoi a mae'r ymdrech yn adlewyrchu ddylanwad oesol y grwp arbennig yma ar y sin yn Nghymru yn gyffredinol ac ar gwmni recordiau Ankstmusik yn benodol.

Ankstmusik Records are proud to release a very special box set of material by legendary Peel favourites DATBLYGU.

'WYAU, PYST AND LIBERTINO' is, as the title suggests a re-release package containing all three of their classic albums on one double CD package.

This release also includes a massive 68 page lyric book containing the lyrics and translations for all 52 tracks. The english translations were done in 2004 by Datblygu mainman David R.Edwards especially for this release. Also included is a photo booklet spanning the band's career and it all comes in a full colour wraparound box sleeve.

This release is one of the most comprehensive releases attempted by ankst musik and the importance attatched to it represents the simple fact that the record label (and many of the artists who have worked with ankst over sixteen years) would not have existed were it not for these recordings and the inspirational work of this most special of groups.

From the first notes of 'Painting the ceiling with my brain', from 1988's 'Wyau', which is a defiant Welsh language instrumental to the desparate , naked fury of 'Beer mat from Hell' from final album 'Libertino' in 1993 it was obvious that DATBLYGU were making radical musical statements and at the same time using the Welsh language in a modern, unique and powerful way. It is no real surprise to realise today that Datblygu's music and their legacy is still a singular one .It is their one-of-a-kind-ness and their wonderfully unique music and worldview that is celebrated with this release .......Hail Datblygu !

WHAT THE PRESS HAVE SAID ABOUT 'WYAU, PYST A LIBERTINO:

An epic two CD monument to the legacy of the band enticingly dubbed 'The Welsh Fall'. For anyone who has always wondered why the name of this sadly defunct trio was uttered with such reverence by John Peel, this is a great chance to find out. Each of these three albums contains moments of rugged genius. English language lyric translations now allow non-Welsh speakers to share in the singular vision of songwriter David R. Edwards. This heroically splenetic individual doesn't just fulminate pithily about 'one track minds in 48 track studios', he offers a practical alternative: a 48 track mind with a dictaphone.
OBSERVER MUSIC MAGAZINE (Ben Thompson)

Nowadays there is a massive Welsh music scene which wouldn't exist without the sweat and toil of Datblygu. In the eighties and nineties, there was an amazing Welsh underground of gloomy twisted leftfield rock. Most of it was on Ankst, and if you're looking for an archetypal band in a scene that eschew archetypes, it has to be Datblygu. Built around the central figure of travel phobic David R. Edwards, Datblygu hardly gigged but recorded brilliantly skewed songs with scathing lyrics. There was always something comforting about the fact there was this weird irritant out there in the middle of Wales, bending rock out of shape and being ignored by the music biz sqaures. They sing in Welsh and it spunds perfect in these tedious days of the anglo-American axis, where all pop culture has to be sung in Britney American English - it's great to hear someone singing on their own language. Of course you don't have to understand a word - Datblygu make you feel their dislocation. Also they've kindly translated all the words into English in the lyric book to make sure you know damn well what living in Wales was like back then. There is a spook to their music: a lilting, goofy off the wallness, an isolation. There is humour, anger, sarcasm and sadness, all in equal doses. Datblygu should be remembered for more than being Welsh, or being underground. Datblygu were a stunning group who made distinctive music a million miles away from the self important metropolitan music scenes. They hung around for three albums (beautifully re-packaged together here) by 1995 they had disappeared, a tragic loss.
PLAN B MAGAZINE (John Robb)

Let's say this again - Datblygu are important. And completely mystifying. And dirty. And wild. And playful. And mordant. And intelligent. And stressful. And awful, and gnarled before their time. Casting off shadows of the past, of preconception, a perverse, intensive introspective dialogue, with the mass of a mountain. Acid. Acidic. Acrid. Intelligent. Wine soaked. Farcical. Unsettling. Viral. I grew up in Wales. I grew up speaking Welsh badly and was alternately jealous, scared, inspired, defiled and defined by Datblygu. A band whose lyrical barbs and lime-tounged barbarism sparkled and shat themselves to a dark backdrop of sparse power. The Fall references are only valid in an esoteric context. More attitude than musicanship. Laconic desperation and virulently honest cynicism, nobody has ever made the Welsh language dance like this. Maybe nobody ever will. There is nothing more compassionate than staggering out of it in a fug of visceral special needs soulshard and slurring threats, offering out cackling demons both personal and political. Often there's no difference. Maybe never. No resolution. Fun doesn't come into it. Often. Sometimes. But not often. Mischief is different more compelling. There's many reasons for that .I hope that some of the reason is that people need to know what is possible. Possibilites inherent in bad grooves, crowd noises, beeps, ash-minded shuddering soundscapes. Of doom and of joy. Of kicking against the pricks. Where debt shall have no dominion. These three albums are reissued on Ankst long with a beautiful booklet that has English language versions of the lyrics alongside the originals, criminal crackpipe bashbeauty that spouted from David R. Edwards and assosciates between 1988 and 1993. Five years only. But from fever comes fire. In a boxset. Another damned irony, of course, superb.
UNPEELED / Joe Shooman

I have already endured so many bizarre experiences and come through them relatively unscathed. As a result of a three album set by John Peel favourites Datblygu, I have learned how to say "VD for sale in the campsite" in Welsh ("VD ar werth yn y maes pebyll" if you're ever in Rhyl.)
THE GUARDIAN / Alexis Petridis
(reviewing all the uk albums released in October 2004)

How many dull indie slowcoaches have ignored an entire generation of brilliant Welsh-language music because they couldn't understand the words ? Well they have NO excuse for bypassing this fantastic, essential reissue of Datblygu's three studio albums packaged in one box set with English translations. Datblygu frontman David R. Edwards wrote such wonderfully poetic lyrics, suffused with a deathly romantic gloom, that the intricacies of the message would survive any translation. Similarily there may be very little today that sounds like these 52 tracks of off-kilter, lurching experimentalism, but this doesn't dilute the impact of Datblygu in any way.
BUZZ MAGAZINE / Noel Gardner

Although everyone from Catatonia to SFA to John Peel have sung the praises of acerbic Welsh language post-punks Datblygu, no figure has yet emerged from the Welsh rock scene who can fill the shoes of frontman David R. Edwards. Motivated by a hatred of the Tory government and a contempt for the retrogressive Welsh culture industry, Edwards captained his band through 13 years of confrontational gigs and a handful of records that cast its bucketfuls of bile far and wide. This two cd set reissue of the band's best three albums confirms that The Fall are Datblygu's most obvious musical antecedent, but it's Edwards delivery that most stamp this band's identity - best summed up in 'Song For Wales', a contempuous satire on the emerging Welsh middle class.
SOUND NATION / Louis Pattison

There will be two types of punters for this CD box set. The die-hard Datblygu fan - of which there are many - and the totally uninitiated who want to get to grips with one of Wales's seminal bands. So what will they get for their money ? Primarily easy access to three of Datblygu's classic albums. There's also a 68 page lyric booklet containing the original lyrics as well as recent English translations, done by the front man himself, for all 52 tracks. This is not your usual 'best of' box set put together by a greedy record company seeking to squeeze a few extra pounds out of their artist. The package is worthy of Datblygu's artistic integrity. It's clear that a lot of thought has gone into making sure that they secure a place in the musical mindset of the twenty first century. Great care has been taken to make the band's music and legacy accessible. Not only do you have the lyrics and their translations, but there are also photographs and an excellent article about the band that sheds much light on the their motivations and influences. The image of Wales is not one to please the Welsh Tourist Board. The final album 'Libertino' has a very contemporary vibe that makes it hard to believe that it is ten years old. Lyrically and melodically these songs cut into you like a jagged piece of glass. This is not romanticised anguish - it's a bloody mess. Nothing is compromised in Datblygu's message. All the songs are sung out of a non-conformist radicalism that was blisteringly different to the spirit of the age into which it was born and thankfully has lost none of its cutting edge. I was foolish to fear. This music has a timeless urgency. Datblygu fans will need no encouragement to go out and buy this box set, to the uninitiated I say - go and take a gulp of this bittersweet vintage.

WENDYKURK

Following on from a series of gigs in Wales in late 2003 and a stint producing new promo videos over Xmas WENDYKURK are preparing to promote their recently released album SOFT MEAT all through 2004. The album released in late 2003 has received fantastic reviews, including the following assessment in Kerrang.

Impressive malevolent wrath from twisted Welsh mob. One listen to 'Soft Meat', the debut album from twisted metallers Wendykurk will leave you in no doubt that this Welsh crew weren't born with enough middle fingers. From the howling banshee vocals of frontwoman Nomi to the dense, despairing soundscapes right through to the album packaging this is one band that positively drips disdain and rancid nihilism. Soft Meat is delightfully putrid. There are the rough edges you would expect from a low budget debut, but they don't hold back the torrent of bile and discord that Wendykurk have in spades. This one will be giving you nightmares for weeks.

KKK - Mark Griffiths / KERRANG!

The band will be paying a prestigious London date at renowned rock venue 'Upstairs at the Garage' in Highbury Corner on March 16th at a rock gig promoted by RSW promoters.

WENDYKURK - SOFT MEAT

Released September 2003 (ankst 109)

'They are Wales' most rancid musical canker, and all the more precious for it' - Adam Walton / BBC RADIO Wales / The Daily Post

'Butthole Surfers meet The Jesus Lizard and invite System Of A Down to their house party , where Babes in Toyland are waiting for them with elephant guns. Hear this record immediately ' - Noel Gardner / NME

'Terrifying' - BBC Radio 1

'Freaks' - South Wales Echo

Extreme rockers WENDYKURK are about to release their debut album for Ankst Musik Records. SOFT MEAT will be in the shops in September through Shellshock Distribution. The album's six tracks were recorded over an intense three day recording period at the magical Bryn Derwen studio with engineer and producer David Wrench. Already the band have become notorious in Wales for their visceral live performances, outlandish appearance, youthful anger and for just scaring the shit out of most people who see their extraordinary live shows. Make no mistake WENDYKURK are a very special band. Formed in Holyhead at the beginning of the new millenium the band have refined their musical style to create something altogether new and exciting. SOFT MEAT is a brutal and unrelenting album containing some truly breathtaking rock music. From the 'fuck you' manifesto in screaming that is Violet Introspection and the incredibly brutal Dogbones, to the poppy and commercial Sometimes and Freckles nestling next to the epic rock swagger of Aurora and Chain Of Daisies. The whole album is dynamic and challenging with singer Nomi's extraordinary vocals carrying all before her. The band have recorded BBC Radio 1 sessions and have been featured recently on the newly created underground music satellite music station ORG TV (the promo video for Freckles), they are being featured in ROCKSOUND and generally they are being hailed as one of the most vital of the new breed of UK rock bands making an impact in 2003.

ZABRINSKI - KOALA KO-ORDINATION (ankst 106)

'ZABRINSKI are up there with the Super Furry Animals or Mercury Rev for sheer melodic middle-finger defiance, with their tremendous Warp blurred heavy psychedelia - they will be hailed as the next chapter in a legacy of Welsh mavericks'. NME.

‘KOALA KO-ORDINATION' will be the follow up album to last year's YETI. Originally from Carmarthen, West Wales ZABRINSKI (average age 19) are now settled in Cardiff having worked their way to the top of the musical pile in Wales with dates supporting the likes of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci and Coldplay.

Individual members Matthew (vocals, guitar) Iwan (electronica) and Gareth (guitar) have been making music together since they were in school and form the heart of ZABRINSKI. Charming, talented, funny, outspoken, extreme and totally dedicated to their music, ZABRINSKI's recordings are endowed with a maturity and vision that sees them joining a crop of other recent young bands (The Coral, The Zutons) in taking a psychedelic blueprint to create something strangely new.

KAOLA KO-ORDINATION sees ZABRINSKI upping their own personal ante with their finest record to date. A perfect distillation of their far-reaching sounds, KAOLA KO-ORDINATION swings delightfully from moody electronica (Blen) to skewed, mind altering trip-ballads (Kaoloa Ko-Ordination) through joyous, life affirming pop (Raid The Farm) before ending with epic slow-mo grandeur (Release The Hounds). Kaola Ko-Ordination confirms ZABRINSKI to be one of the most talented and exciting young bands in the U.K right now.

ZABRINSKI are: Matthew Durbridge - Vocals / Guitar, Iwan Morgan - Electronica / keyboards, Gareth Richardson - Guitar, Rhun Lenny - Bass, Owain Jones - Drums

Tracklisting: Blen / Koala Ko-Ordination / Switzerland / Pan Central / Black Forest Science Friction / Spleneticals / Floodback / Raid The Farm / I Ask The Questions / Plus 3 / Release The Hounds

What they say about Koala - Ko-Ordination.................

Welsh acid youth peak with boundary threatning electronica. Over the course of three albums , Carmarthen's Zabrinksi have progressed from guitar caners with a Board Of Canada album to full on electronic-psych forces . Koala Ko-Ordination the finest and strangest thing they've done to date finds the trio scaling new creative heights . 'Blen' and 'Plus 3' skitter dremaily through the territory of the Black Dog or Aphex's 'Ambient Works' while on 'Pan Central' some rusty chords wobble through a dense fog of echoey dub , like Primal Scream if they'd lived in a mid Wales caravan for a year . Even if they did go supernova , Zabrinski would probably remain happy getting slowly baked in a studio . But that's not to say they don't deserve a nation's love , unlikely a prospect as it is

NME 8/10 Noel Gardner

Out of the news since donating Welsh mavericks Gorky's Zygotic Mynci and Super Furry Animals to the cause Ankst have done it again . While the Carmarthen quartet's first two albums escaped notice - Koala Ko-Ordination's broody bewitching electronica surely won't . The title track could be Gorky's ...with twitchy beats but the overriding mood - urgent , fresh , trippy - is early Stone Roses , However Zabrinksi can latch onto trip hop swarthiness and wide eyed pop , while the album peak 'Black Forest Science Friction's' vocoder led mantra proves it's not just The Coral taking psychedelia forwards

Q MAGAZINE - four stars / Martin Aston

Cardiff teenagers second album Zabrinski sound old beyond their years. Blending Warp style click beat electronica with cosmic psychedelia , they've absorbed some hugely potent music , more importantly they've reshaped it their way . Veering between icy atmospherics ('Blen') , future folk introspection('Switzerland') and ripe pop perfection ( 'Raid the Farm' ) Zabrinski wrestle ambition with ability and make bold eclecticism sound easy . Brain scrambling yet assuredly elegant , these precocious teenagers look set to usurp Super Furry Animals as Wales's leading wide eyed adventurists

UNCUT - four stars / Neil Davenport

There's something endearingly shambolic about Zabrinski .The Welsh seven-piece began their career by misspelling 'Zabrinski' ( as in cult 70's film Zabriskie Point ) and they've stumbled on in a gloriously non linear way from there . The most obvious influence is Gorky's Zygotic Mynci:there's a shared love of melody and idiosyncratic lyrics , but they also favour Pink Floyd , Super Furry Animals and The Orb . Instrumental opener 'Blen' takes its cue from the latter two , pulsing so sublimely through mournful electronica that it's almost a shame when the vocals kick in on the title track . After all , the lyrics don't exactly make much snese and occasionaly their whimsical nature makes them unfocussed .The'point' may be missing but you'll enjoy Zabrinski's attempts to find it .

WHAT'S ON - three stars / Trevor Baker

Zabrinksi release the eclectically fabulous Koala Ko-Ordination on ankst musik . It's nu-psychedelia for pop kids and having supported Coldplay they've learned a thing or two about melody .Cracking stuff from West Wales all trippy pop and banal electronics

THE FLY MAGAZINE / Ian Abraham

With their pop heritage including SFA and GZM, Zabrinksi have a lot to live up to if they want to take on the mantle of the next great Welsh pop act. Happily 'Koala' goes some way to prove their qualifications ; it's gentle demeanour not unlike Gorky's enchanting pastoralism, its psychedelic reflexes evidence of a similar experimental curiousity to the Super Furries. What Zabrinski really love doing, though, is messing about with machines, the throbing buzz drone hovering beneath every song occasionaly bursting into the cosmic white noise that really gives this album weight. The songwriting could do with a bit more work, but this is always interesting stuff

METRO - LIFE

These Cardiff teenagers are plotting a weird path between fellow countrymen SFA and GZM on their second album. From the bubbling inventiveness of the title track to the lo-fi weirdness of Switzerland and the bats in the bellfry strangeness of Spleneticals, there's madcap ideas plenty. Hopefully they'll add a sharper sense of focus and direction as they mature.

DAILY MIRROR / Saturday - three stars

Slipping through moods, modes and genres Zabrinski are difficult to pigeonhole - though perhaps that is in fact their intention. This confusion shouldn't imply that Koala is a dud. But it does mean the release is a little hard to switch onto. However after a few listens things start to fall into place, and its appeal stands out bold, while you're left wondering 'Why didn't I get this before ?". Possibly because on first listen your audible senses get lost in the swarm of sounds, or maybe because its mix of songs that merge somewhere between fok, indie and 60's psychedelia. 'Blen' is ethereal and elegant and electric. Switzerland is guitar-based and peaceful, while 'Raid the Farm' is a robotic swiriling tune. All diverse, yet together they're slow burning and addictive, and definitely worth a listen or two.

DJ MAGAZINE

Under the youthful guidance of whimsical cosmonauts The Coral, the North West has gallantly shouldered its way to the front of the queue for cosmic drug-addled psychedelics. Knocking away the odd branch of garage rock here and the dying tuft of electroclash there, flattening a path for fellow mavericks The Zutons and The Bandits to follow, The Coral have wrestled the mantle for blurred, heavy psychedelia away from its rightful owners across the Severn Bridge. Not any more though, because the Welsh are back. Whether it really is something in the water, or the fact that, like in Liverpool, musical trends rarely snare the public's consciousness like they do in the capital, there's no doubting the heaving production line for neo-psychedelic rock that's hidden in Welsh valleys. Zabrinski are brazen in their debt to fellow countrymen the Super Furry Animals and, more openly, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci with this, the follow up to last years criminally undervalued debut ‘Yeti'. Shuffling a well-worn hand to reveal something new, yet strangely comfortable, ‘Koala Ko-Ordination' finds the teenage trio blurring tight melodies with all manner of kitchen sink effrontery. On ‘Blen', slow-burning electronica recalls a forlorn Euros Childs, contrasting almost perfectly with the spoon-bending eccentricity of the album's title track and the pure pop genius of ‘Raid The Farm' as Zabrinski continually fold and flip their much-loved musical foundations. They're adept enough to prise the glowing torch away from the North West and it's plain Zabrinski aren't here to merely make up the numbers; they want the prize all to themselves, and why the hell shouldn't they ?

LOGO-MAGAZINE.COM

my favourite officialy released album of the year, Zabrinski's kaleidoscopic Koala Ko-Ordination, even Jamie Oliver would be hard pressed to cook up a more enticing stew from such a disparate ingredients: drum n'bass, trance and Bulgarian folk music.

Adam Walton - Daily Post / BBC Radio Wales .

if you're as big a sucker for 'interesting' noises decorating smart pop you'll love this, amost as much as I do. From the fresh sounding little shuffle of 'Blen' with it's cooly sampled Space Invaders sounds to the bright, sunny, slow stamp of ' Release The Hounds ' that is surely the only adequate European response to the likes of Yami Bolo, liquid sunshine flowing from your speakers, bask, kiddies, bask. In between you get stuff like 'Switzerland' no chocholate, but it does charmingly manage to combine pastoral acoustic guitar and shuffling beats with the straighforward theft of the burbling computer effect from T-Rex's 76 smasheroo 'New York City ' - coool . Liking that, I did the arse over elbow thing for 'Black Forest Science Friction' that appears to have Stephen Hawkins on lead vox and a guiatr being tunefully sawn in half, a nagging and insistent thing that demands only your attention, again, cooool. Still best moments come with 'Floodback' which seems to have mastered the art of feedbacking from those egg slicer guitars so loved by Elastica and made a happy marriage with them and some snappy drum sounds, is this a great record ? Of course it is you cloth eared skoth, oh and Merry Xmas

PEEL PAPERS

The grand tradition of Welsh psychedelic pop is a grand one; quite possible it's the sheer amount of rain which is responsible for all the kookiness spilling around. Zabrinski follow the path of Beach boys harmonies and Flaming Lips sound scapes with admirable panache , giving it all a trip hop twist along the way. 'Black Forest Science Friction', which sounds exactly like its quirkily evocative title, and epic closer 'Release the Hounds' are more Massive Attack than Mercury Rev. Meanwhile 'Switzerland' rewrites the lounge bar classic for damp, forested Wales as far as cheesy listening goes, its definitely mature Roquefort. A tendency to lose focus aside, its an impressive second outing .

BUZZ Magazine Aidon Mahony

Returning to the studio after 'Yeti', Zabrinski had the intention of recording an e.p. but left with a brand new album, and its an absolute cracker. Here Zabrinski make their heavy ambient electronic sound their own. Opener 'Blen' is every chillout DJ's ultimate fantasy while the title track owns the clunky spin-top melody Babybird nearly achieved with his Bugged album. Switzerland has an exquisite balanced orchestral sound that - rich and layered as it is - never overcrowded or claustrophobic. Elsewhere 'Floodback' contrasts wispy echoes with dirgy sound effects . Koala Ko-Ordination songs elaborate brilliantly on the melody-rich pop song at their heart. It's perfect every time

NEW RELEASE / ALBYM NEWYDD

Artist - M C MABON

Title - NIA NON

Cat - ANKST 104

Out - 28th OCTOBER 2002

Braint gan ankstmusik yw cyhoeddi fod trydydd casgliad M C MABON ar gyfer y label ar fin cael eu rhyddhau. Mae NIA NON yn cynnwys un deg chwech o ganeuon cymraeg cwbl newydd.

Fe recordiwyd yr albym draw yn stiwdios Blaen y Cae yn Garndobenmaen gyda chymorth Dyl Mei ( Pep Le Pew ) a stiwdios Ty Drwg gyda Frank Naughton . Unwaith eto mae Gruff Meredith wedi creu casgliad o bop Cymraeg gwbl unigryw ac eto'n profi ei fod o'n drysor cenedlaethol ..... Dyma oedd gan M C Mabon i ddeud am yr albym yn ddiweddar:

"dyma albym newydd M C ffycin Mabon. Wedi'w recordio yn 2002 am 24 ceiniog. Aroglwch eich ffroenau a taflwch eich penol i'r awyr . Rhochiwch yn uchel yn eich cwsg a llawenhewch wrth ffeindio pethe rhyfedd yn eich pocedi. Butwch y syltanas a peidiwch teimlo'n euog. Hwre !"

ankstmusik are proud to announce the imminent arrival of the new M C MABON album - NIA NON. Following on from the hugely acclaimed HUNT FOR MEANING, once more GRUFF MEREDITH sidesteps us all with a sixteen track 32 minute Welsh language collection of songs. The tracks were simply recorded with minimal rhythms, acoustic instruments, an out of tune piano and colourful contributions from all and sundry.

This is what M C MABON had to say about it recently:

"this is a new M C ffycin Mabon album. Recorded in 2002 for 24 pence it is absolutely marvelous and should be avoided at all costs. Try to go out with the sole intention of getting a copy then get digressed and go to Boots and buy some sustained release vitamin C and optimistic sun tan lotion instead"

MC MABON - ESSENTIAL INFORMATION .....................

M C MABON is essentially a one man band fronted by the hyper talented GRUFF MEREDITH. A one time member of politico-hip-hop rappers TYSTION this new project is quite a different call to arms .

Debut Album MR BLAIDD, released in early 2000 charted several musical landscapes from punk, rock, rap and hip hop to instrumental, pastoral and electro funk - all emanating from Gruff Meredith's feverish imagination.

Lyrically the debut album had everything from apocalyptic dystopian scenarios ('Waterwars') to teen mag romance ('Log cabin') from humourous observation ('Aros am bysus a trenau' - waiting for trains and buses) to betrayed youth (' XR3i' ), eco warnings ('neith y byd ddim para am byth' - the world won't last forever) to flat out rock fantasy ('Anifal gwyllt' - wild animal).

Radio 1 appearances for John Peel and The Session in Wales preceded the release of second album THE HUNT FOR MEANING which appeared in Summer 2001 - this release took M C MABON onto another level entirely .

THE HUNT FOR MEANING was conceived as an English language concept album. Invited guests included Cardiff band ROCKET GOLD STAR and the UK CHINESE FESTIVAL ENSEMBLE as well as a host of guest rappers and singers who provided the many different voices that accompanied Gruff on his journey through the album .

The album was genuinely eclectic and innovative in style and structure. Lyrically M C MABON used the English language skillfully with humour and intelligence. The album easily accommodated pop appeal with highly ambitious song concepts and genuine lyrical depth with startling compositions like 'Fire Within', 'Get it out yo system' and 'Spirit Level'.

The reviews for the album were phenomenal .

'the sheer ridiculousness of this record cannot be underestimated. When it comes to gabba-ragga-punk-disco-flute-hop with barking dogs on , it looks like M C Mabon just wrote the rulebook - NME

' the hunt for meaning is a witty and hedonistic concept album . the result is an engrossing trip through lots of different musical styles , underinned by raw hip hop and punky guitars - THE INDEPENDENT

' Wacky Welsh odyssey. The Hunt for Meaning is a real gem. Ankstmusik may well have discovered its next superstar. There's gunfire, rap, spoken word, gritty garage band, rock and roll, scratching, beautiful vocals and ballads. This is no novelty record .Go out and buy - THE EVENING STANDARD (ALBUM OF THE WEEK )

'irresistible, bonkers, brilliant' - RADIO1

'gwych ydi'r unig air i'w ddisgrifi . A dweud y gwir ma'r holl record yn walltgof, heb son am fod yn glyfar dros ben' - BBC CYMRU'R BYD / RADIO CYMRU

' M C Mabon has created an album of indefinable and fearless proportions exploring all areas of blues, rock, hip-hop, electronic, punk, folk, ambient and even Chinese ensemble music' - THE WESTERN MAIL

' This riotous musical odyssey represents the triumph of chutzpah over budgetary limitation. M C Mabon mastermind Gruff Meredith has fashioned an underground half-brother to Super Furry Animals's Rings around the World' - MOJO

'The Hunt For Meaning could well become Three Feet High and Rising's mushroommunching Welsh cousin' - THE DAILY POST
